The closest trip in the whole series: wheatfields, Van Gogh's grave, the room he died in, and a real Impressionist museum — all about 40 minutes from Meudon-la-Forêt, with zero charging and honestly not even a strict need to stay overnight.
Van Gogh spent his final 70 days here in 1890, painting roughly 80 canvases — including Wheatfield with Crows and The Church at Auvers — before dying of a gunshot wound in the small attic room of the Auberge Ravoux, the inn where he'd been lodging. His brother Theo, who died six months later, is buried next to him in the village cemetery. The whole village is still recognizably the one he painted: the church, the town hall, the wheatfields on the plateau above. It's an easy, cheap, deeply worthwhile half-day trip, and at ~40 km it's by far the shortest drive in this series — this one barely counts as a road trip at all.
Start at the Auvers cemetery (Cimetière d'Auvers-sur-Oise), a short walk uphill from the village — Vincent and Theo van Gogh's graves, side by side, covered in ivy, completely free to visit. Walk down through the wheatfields (the "Champ de blé aux corbeaux" site, the field he painted just before his death, with a plaque marking the spot) to the Church at Auvers (Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption), the subject of one of his most famous canvases — free to view from outside, the view matches the painting almost exactly.
In the village itself, visit the Auberge Ravoux ("Maison de Van Gogh") — the actual inn, with his tiny, unfurnished attic room preserved as it was (deliberately left empty, no artifacts, just the room itself) — entry €7 for adults, €5 for ages 12–17, free under 12; a 30-minute guided tour is included at the same price. It's also still a working restaurant serving a period-style menu if you want a splurge lunch. Nearby, Daubigny's studio (Maison-Atelier de Daubigny) — the painter Charles-François Daubigny's home and studio, with painted ceilings and walls by Daubigny, Corot, Daumier and others — is open seasonally with its own modest entry fee.
In the afternoon, walk or drive up to the Château d'Auvers for "Voyage au temps des impressionnistes," an immersive multimedia exhibition on the birth of Impressionism (video/sound projections, ~1–1.5 hrs) — full price around €12–15 depending on season/booking channel, reduced/child rate around €7–9; the château park and gardens are free to walk even without a ticket.

Auvers sits directly on the Boucle cyclable d'Auvers-sur-Oise, a signposted 33 km loop through the Oise and Sausseron valleys, and on the Avenue Verte London–Paris (the 406 km London–Paris cycle route), which splits into a Vexin branch and an Oise-valley branch right around here — the Oise-valley branch runs flat riverside paths through Auvers, Pontoise and L'Isle-Adam. It's an easy, mostly flat ride — genuinely one of the gentlest rides in this whole series, good for a relaxed morning loop along the river rather than a workout. Honestly — probably not, unless you want the bike ride or you're combining this with something else nearby. At 40 km and 46 minutes each way, Auvers is comfortably a rich single day trip from Meudon-la-Forêt: cemetery, wheatfields, church, Auberge Ravoux, Daubigny's studio and the château can all fit into one unhurried day, and you'd be home for dinner. The honest recommendation is to frame this as a day trip by default, with the overnight/bivouac only worth doing if you specifically want an easy riverside bike morning before heading home, or if you're stringing it together with another Val d'Oise stop (Pontoise, L'Isle-Adam forest) to make a fuller weekend.
