An easy, gentle weekend: one of the finest Gothic cathedrals on earth (UNESCO World Heritage), 176 original medieval stained-glass windows, a half-timbered old town wrapped around the little river Eure, and — through the winter — the whole city lit up for free every night.
Chartres Cathedral survived the centuries almost untouched — it still has nearly all of its original 12th–13th century stained glass, the famous "Chartres blue," and a full-scale labyrinth set into the nave floor. It's a genuinely world-class monument, roughly an hour from Meudon-la-Forêt on ordinary roads, well within a single charge round trip. Below the cathedral, the Vieux Chartres old town tumbles down cobbled lanes to the river Eure, lined with half-timbered houses, footbridges, and old tanneries — a proper wander, not just a cathedral drive-by. And if your dates land between April and early January, the whole town gets projected onto after dark for free.
Head straight down to the cathedral — the nave, ambulatory and rose windows are free to walk through and don't need a ticket. If you want the view, the north tower (Clocher Neuf) climb is a paid extra: roughly €7–10, 300 spiral steps up to 60m for a panorama over Chartres and the flat Beauce plain (check current price at the CMN ticket desk — it's changed a few euros in recent years). The crypt and treasury are separately ticketed too if you want them. Afterwards, drop down into the Vieux Chartres old town: half-timbered houses along Rue de la Tannerie and the riverside quays, footbridges over the Eure, and — April to October — a gentle barque ride on the "Petite Venise" stretch of the Eure (Parc des Bords de l'Eure), about €6.50–13.50 depending on route/season. Just wander the riverbanks for free if the boats aren't running.
A relaxed second morning: finish the old town on foot or by bike, catch the Saturday/Wednesday market at Place Billard if timing allows, or just sit by the river with a coffee before the short drive home. Easily done as a single-night trip if you want to keep it minimal.
The free parking area by the Plan Vert connects directly to a cycle path into town, and the riverside paths along the Eure are flat, easy, and pleasant for an evening spin once the bike's reassembled — loaded inside per the Car Camping & Bike Guide. Chartres itself is compact enough to explore mostly on foot, so the bike here is more about the ride in/out and the riverbanks than a full day's cycling.
