An easy, well-within-range weekend: a genuine imperial residence (Napoleon III's favourite), the clearing where two world wars ended, and 14,000+ hectares of beech forest laced with cycling tracks — under 100km from Meudon-la-Forêt.
Compiègne was Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie's favourite residence, and the imperial apartments still feel lived-in rather than roped-off — smaller crowds than Versailles or even Fontainebleau. A few kilometres into the forest sits the Clairière de l'Armistice, where the WWI armistice was signed in a railway carriage on 11 November 1918 (and where Hitler forced the French surrender in the same replica carriage in 1940) — one of the more quietly powerful historical sites within range of Paris. Wrap it in the Forêt de Compiègne itself: one of France's largest state forests, with 275km of marked cycling tracks through beech woods, more than enough for a full day on the bike.

Drive up mid-morning (mostly free N-roads/A1, light tolls if any). First stop: the Château de Compiègne — imperial apartments furnished as Napoleon III and Eugénie left them, plus the Musée de la Voiture (historic carriages). Entry €10 full / €8 reduced, free under 26 and on the first Sunday of each month; the 20-hectare park itself is free and open daily. Afterwards drive or ride into the forest to the Clairière de l'Armistice — the clearing itself is free to walk, and the museum with the replica armistice railway carriage is €5 (€3 for kids).
Morning bike ride on the forest's marked network — the classic loop runs from the Carrefour Royal in Compiègne out to Pierrefonds via Saint-Jean-aux-Bois (~15km one-way) and back via Vieux-Moulin, entirely on dedicated tracks under beech canopy. If Pierrefonds' fairy-tale château is open and you have time, it's worth the short detour. Casual lunch in Compiègne's old town before the drive home — early-afternoon departure avoids Sunday return traffic on the A1.
The Forêt de Compiègne has roughly 275km of cycling tracks (fire roads plus dedicated cycle paths) shared between Compiègne and Pierrefonds — one of the best-developed forest cycling networks near Paris, and flat enough that a road bike or gravel setup both work well. Gravel riders can also link into the ~107km "Intégrale de la forêt de Compiègne" loop past Pierrefonds château and the Armistice wagon.
