Dinan's ramparts stretch nearly 3 km around the old town almost unbroken — one of the most complete surviving medieval fortifications in France, let alone Brittany. Inside them, half-timbered houses lean over cobbled lanes, and the steep, cobbled Rue du Jerzual drops from the town gates straight down to the old port on the Rance river, lined with artisan workshops the whole way. Below, the Rance itself is a genuine find: a broad tidal river/canal with a flat towpath running south toward the abbey village of Léhon — easy, scenic cycling that has nothing to do with the climb back up into town. It's real Brittany, not the coastal tourist crush of Saint-Malo 30 minutes away, and it earns the extra driving distance.
