Gerberoy is a tiny fortified hilltop village in the Oise (Picardy), population under 100, built on the site of a medieval castle destroyed in the 15th century. Painter Henri Le Sidaner settled here in 1901, fell for the place, restored buildings, and got the whole village planting roses — climbing roses now cover half-timbered brick-and-flint houses along cobbled streets lined with lime trees. It's officially listed among the "Plus Beaux Villages de France." The Paris–Gerberoy road distance is 104 km (about 1h09, mostly via the A16/A115 corridor) according to ViaMichelin and Bonnes Routes; starting from Meudon-la-Forêt on the southwest side of Paris adds roughly another 8–10 km, putting the real one-way drive at about 112 km / 1h30–1h40 depending on route through the Oise back roads.

Late-morning arrival, park at the free grass lot at the village entrance (daytime only) and walk in — cars aren't meant to clog the cobbled lanes. Spend the afternoon wandering: the Rue Notaire, Rue du Château and Rue Logis du Roy are the classic rose-covered routes, plus the old collegiate church and the ramparts viewpoint over the Picardy countryside. If you time it for the first Sunday of June, the annual Fête des Roses (since 1928, ~97th edition in 2026) fills the streets with rose growers, artisans and flower stalls — entry €2, free under 10. Outside that weekend the roses still peak through June into early July.
Visit the Jardins Henri Le Sidaner in the heart of the village — the painter's own 4,000 m² garden with ramparts, a Temple of Love, pergola and rose beds, labeled "jardin remarquable." Open daily May 1–Sept 30, 11am–6pm, entry €6 (free under 12).

Drive 20 minutes to Beauvais for the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre — an unfinished Gothic cathedral with the tallest Gothic choir in the world (48.5m under the vault), a soaring "cage of glass" that was too ambitious even for its 13th-century builders (the transept partially collapsed twice). Self-guided visits are free; guided tours run €8/person on the 2nd Saturday of the month and by request. Grab lunch in town, then it's a straight shot back to Meudon-la-Forêt, well within a single charge.
