Hossegor — Big Wave Surf & Pine Forest

Europe's beach-break capital: powerful, occasionally brutal Atlantic shore-break, real WSL competition sand, and an enormous pine-forest cycling network right behind the dunes. This is the long haul of the series — plan a charging stop.

Why Hossegor

Hossegor's beach break — La Gravière, La Nord, La Sud — is genuinely one of the heaviest, most respected waves in Europe: powerful, fast, close to shore, and steep enough that the Quiksilver/Roxy Pro World Surf League tour has run events here for years. It's not a gentle beginner wave by default; the shore-break can be dangerous even for competent surfers, especially at mid-to-low tide with any swell running. It's paired with something more forgiving: a genuinely huge network of flat, shaded cycling paths through the pine forest (the Landes forest) that runs for kilometers behind the dune line, connecting Hossegor, Seignosse, and Capbreton — easy riding to recover the legs between surf sessions.

Getting There & Charging

Driving distance Meudon-la-Forêt → Soorts-Hossegor is roughly 745–750 km, about 7h40–7h55 of driving via the A10/A63, per ViaMichelin route data. That's 2.3–2.7x your realistic ~330–370 km range at 97% SOH, so this is a real multi-stop trip, not a single-charge dash.

Charging plan: Break the drive with 1–2 Supercharger stops along the A10 corridor (e.g. near Poitiers/Bordeaux) to arrive with comfortable margin, then top up at the Bayonne Supercharger (1 Chemin de Hayet, Bayonne — 8 stalls, up to 250 kW, 24/7), about 25 km from Hossegor — convenient for topping up before heading home or for day trips toward Biarritz/Bilbao.

Day-by-Day

Day 1 — Thursday/Friday

Meudon-la-Forêt → Hossegor

~745 km, ~7h45 driving + charging stops

Long driving day — leave early, split it with 1–2 Supercharger stops (Poitiers area, then Bordeaux area), aiming to land with enough charge to reach camp without hunting for a plug on arrival evening. Set up camp, short evening walk on the beach to check conditions before committing to a lesson.

Day 2 — Adrenaline day

Surf lesson + beach time

Morning group surf lesson (see below) — most schools run their beginner/intermediate group sessions on the calmer Capbreton beaches (Plage des Océanides) rather than directly on La Gravière or La Nord, which are reserved for experienced/local surfers and can have genuinely dangerous shore-break at the wrong tide. Afternoon: rent a board if you want more water time, or just watch the pros work La Gravière — this is literally WSL Quiksilver/Roxy Pro terrain.

Safety note: Hossegor's main breaks (La Gravière, La Nord, La Sud) are known for powerful, fast, close-out shore-break that can slam even strong swimmers into shallow sand — check tide tables and flag conditions, and don't surf the main breaks alone without local experience. Lifeguard-patrolled zones (June–September) are the safer default.

Day 3

Pine forest cycling day

Full day on the bike: the Landes pine forest behind the dune line has a genuinely extensive network of flat, shaded, well-marked paths connecting Hossegor, Seignosse-le-Penon, and Capbreton — easy 20–40 km loops with almost no traffic. Cool off with an afternoon swim/bodyboard session on a calmer beach.

Day 4

Second surf session or comfort meal → home

Either a second lesson/session to build on Day 2's skills, or your treat-yourself meal: fresh Landes/Atlantic seafood, or a proper Basque-influenced dinner nearby in Capbreton's port. Start the long drive home in the afternoon, splitting it with the same charging stops in reverse.

🏄 The Adrenaline: Surf Lessons & Rental

Real prices researched from Hossegor-area surf schools:

ItemPrice
Group lesson, 1h30, max 8 people (Loulou Surf School, Capbreton — equipment included)€60
Private lesson, 1h, dedicated instructor€90
Entry-level group lessons elsewhere in the area (from)≈ €29
Board + wetsuit rental (separate, per session/day, varies by shop)≈ €15–25

Loulou Surf School and most beginner/intermediate operators teach on the gentler Plage des Océanides in Capbreton, 5 minutes from Hossegor — many surfers take the lesson there in the morning, then rent gear to try Hossegor's bigger, punchier beaches in the afternoon once they've got the basics down.

Camping & Bivouac

France's coastal loi littoral bans wild camping directly on beaches and dunes along this whole stretch — camper vans and tents are not permitted to bivouac on the sand or in the protected dune system, and this is enforced. Do not attempt it.
Free/cheap option: Aire de camping-car parking (day/overnight parking areas inland from the beach, away from the dune-protection zone) — check current municipal rules for Hossegor/Seignosse/Capbreton, as allowed overnight parking spots shift by season.

Paid fallback: This coast has some of the biggest campsites in France. A basic tent pitch for two runs roughly €22–35/night in low-to-mid season at area campgrounds (e.g. Camping L'Étang Blanc, Camping Les Dunes d'Or), rising in July–August peak season. Naturéo eco-resort (municipal-linked, Seignosse) mobile-home options start around €35/day for larger groups if you want a night off from the tent.

Bike Notes

Bike rides inside the car per usual (front wheel off, no range penalty). The Landes forest cycling network here is one of the best in France for flat, low-effort riding — long, shaded fire-road-style paths connecting the coastal towns behind the dunes, ideal for an active recovery day between surf sessions. See the Car Camping & Bike Guide for loading setup.
