Leucate sits on a narrow spit between the Mediterranean and the Étang de Leucate lagoon, and it catches wind almost nobody else on the French coast does: the Tramontane, a strong, dry, remarkably reliable northwesterly that funnels down the Aude valley and hits the coast hardest right here. That reputation is not marketing — Leucate genuinely hosts the Mondial du Vent, one of the biggest wind-sport festivals in Europe, and the shallow, flat-water lagoon side is considered one of the best learner kitesurf spots in the country while the open sea side serves the more experienced. Windsurfing and char à voile (sand-yachting) on the wide beaches south toward La Franqui round out a genuine wind-sports hub, not a one-trick kite spot.
Real driving distance Meudon-la-Forêt → Leucate is roughly 830–860 km, around 8 hours of driving before stops.
