Oeschinensee — Turquoise Lake Beneath the Blüemlisalp

A free stopover night in Besançon breaks up the long drive to one of the most striking alpine lakes in Switzerland: turquoise water, a wall of glaciated peaks, and a cable car up from Kandersteg with the bike staying inside the car the whole way.

Why Oeschinensee

Oeschinensee sits at 1,578m above Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: an intensely turquoise glacial lake ringed by the sheer limestone walls of the Blüemlisalp massif, with the Doldenhorn and Fründenhorn glaciers hanging above. The Oeschinensee-Bahn gondola lifts you 480 vertical metres from the valley in about ten minutes, after which it's a level 30-minute walk (stroller-friendly) to the shore — or the full descent on foot in about 90 minutes if you'd rather hike down. No cars, e-bikes or mountain bikes are allowed anywhere near the lake itself — this is a walking-only, protected landscape.

Free stopover used: your free stay in Besançon breaks the ~630km run into two comfortable legs — 413km to Besançon, then a easy 217km/~2h54 hop on to Kandersteg the next evening, matching the Thu-drive/Fri-remote/Fri-evening-onward pattern from the Savoie Lakes trip.

Route & Range Reality

Meudon-la-Forêt → Besançon is a real 413 km / ~3h57 via A6 then A36 ("La Comtoise"). Besançon → Kandersteg is a further 217 km / ~2h54, crossing into Switzerland near Basel then following the A6/A8 up the Kander valley — both legs sit comfortably inside your realistic 330–370 km range on a single charge, so only one Supercharger stop is needed on the whole outbound trip (ideally around Besançon or just after, before the Swiss border).

Swiss vignette required: every vehicle under 3.5t using Swiss motorways needs a vignette — CHF 40 (≈€43), valid 14 months (the 2026 sticker runs 1 Dec 2025 – 31 Jan 2027). Buy it online via via.admin.ch (e-vignette) before crossing, or at the border/a petrol station. It's a one-time cost even if you do more Swiss trips within the validity window.

Day-by-Day

Thu evening

Meudon-la-Forêt → Besançon

413 km, ~3h57 · A6 then A36 · one Supercharger stop en route

Leave after work, bike loaded inside (front wheel off, no range penalty). Arrive late evening for your free stay in Besançon.

Fri (remote)

Besançon — no driving

Full remote workday from Besançon. No drive today — free night again.

Fri evening / Sat

Besançon → Kandersteg

217 km, ~2h54 · Swiss vignette required at the border · well within single-charge range

Log off and drive straight through, or leave first thing Saturday morning — either works, since it's under 3 hours. Buy the vignette before crossing if you haven't already. Arrive in Kandersteg, park for the night, sort groceries in the village.

Free overnight: the Nordic Arena / Sprungschanze (ski jump) parking area in Kandersteg is a known, quiet car-camping spot with WC and a washbasin with hot water — real listing on park4night. Closed only on ski-jump competition weekends. Paid fallback: Camping Rendez-Vous, right by the valley station of the Oeschinensee-Bahn — see their 2026 price list for current per-person/per-night rates (historically around CHF 15–20pp/night).
Sat

Oeschinensee day

Oeschinensee-Bahn cable car, ~10 min ascent · then a level 30-min walk to the shore

Ride the gondola up (book online in advance for a time-slot boarding pass — high season fills up). At the lake: swim in the turquoise water (bracingly cold, glacier-fed), rent a rowboat, or just walk the easy family loop around the shore past Chalet Arva and the mountain restaurant. This is the comfort/splurge day: lunch at the lakeside Berghaus Oeschinensee restaurant, right on the water.

Real prices researched: cable car return (mid-June–late-Sept 2026 high season) CHF 40 adult (CHF 36 in shoulder season, CHF 18.50–22.50 with a Half-Fare Card/GA/Swiss Travel Pass); walk-down-only descent ticket CHF 26.20. Rowboat rental CHF 20 per 30 min / CHF 40 per hour, cash or card.
  • Easy option: the flat loop trail around the lake shore, roughly 1 hour, largely accessible even with a stroller.
  • Serious option: the trail continuing past the lake up to the Fründenhütte (SAC hut, one of three real alpine huts in the area alongside the Doldenhorn and Blüemlisalp huts) — a proper alpine hike with real elevation gain, glacier views, and an overnight-hut option if you want to extend the trip.
  • Cycling of any kind is legally banned in the Oeschinensee protected area — leave the bike at the car this day.
Sun

Kandersteg → home (or a second Besançon night)

630 km direct, or split again via Besançon (217 km + 413 km) · 1–2 Supercharger stops

If you're not in a rush, mirror the outbound route and split the drive home via a second Besançon night. Otherwise it's a long single push with a couple of charging stops — budget a full day either way.

Bike Notes

The bike stays inside the car the whole trip per the Car Camping & Bike Guide — no range penalty, and it's moot at the lake itself since cycling is court-banned in the Oeschinensee protection zone anyway. Kandersteg village and the Kander valley below have normal road cycling if you want a spin before or after the lake day.
