The centerpiece volcano of a UNESCO World Heritage chain of ~80 cinder cones: a car-free summit reached by cog railway or a free hiking path, a Gallo-Roman temple at 1,465m, one of Europe's best paragliding launch sites, and a long-distance trail stitching the whole range together.
Puy de Dôme (1,465m) is the flagship volcano of the Chaîne des Puys — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018, a 45km-long alignment of roughly 80 volcanic cones, domes and craters just west of Clermont-Ferrand. Unlike most French summits, the road to the top has been closed to private cars since 2010: you either walk up a genuinely steep muletiers' trail or ride the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway. At the summit sit the ruins of a Gallo-Roman Temple of Mercury and a 360° panorama across the entire volcanic chain — and on clear days as far as the Massif Central and even Mont Blanc. This trip is distinct from (and a good "part two" to) our Auvergne & Lac Pavin itinerary further south in the Sancy massif — here the focus stays on the Chaîne des Puys itself: the summit, Vulcania, paragliding, and the GR441 long-distance trail.
Meudon-la-Forêt to the Clermont-Ferrand area is about 412.5 km / ~4h18 of driving via the A10/A71 (route l'Aquitaine → l'Arverne); the Puy de Dôme trailheads (Col de Ceyssat, or the Panoramique des Dômes car park at Orcines) sit another 15–20km west, putting the total one-way drive at roughly 430 km, ~4h30. On a 97%-SOH Model Y Premium realistically doing 330–370 km, that comfortably needs just one Supercharger stop on the way down, with an early option if you'd rather split the drive.
The drive comfortably clears on the one Riom Supercharger break, with Orléans available as an optional early stop if you'd rather split it into two shorter legs. Arrive at Orcines/Col de Ceyssat by late afternoon — enough daylight left for a short scouting walk toward the base of the muletiers' path before settling in for the night.
Two ways up: the free Chemin des Muletiers from Col de Ceyssat (steep, roughly 1h30–2h, no charge), or the Panoramique des Dômes cog railway from the Orcines car park — round-trip adult ticket runs roughly €17–19 depending on season. At the summit: the Chaîne des Puys panorama, the Gallo-Roman Temple of Mercury ruins, and on a clear day views toward the Massif Central. Puy de Dôme is also one of the most famous paragliding (parapente) launch sites in Europe — its near-perfect cone shape lets pilots take off into the wind from almost any direction, and it's an official FFVL free-flight site. Adrenaline note: tandem discovery flights with local schools (Freedom Parapente, Aéroparapente, Action Parapente, Flying Puy de Dôme) run roughly €100–170 for a 15–25 minute biplace flight, up to ~€240 for premium/VIP packages.
The GR441 "Tour de la Chaîne des Puys" is a real long-distance trail (~114–120km, 6 days full loop, ~2,600m elevation gain) that circles the entire volcanic range, passing Puy de la Vache, Puy de la Chopine, Lac de Servière, and the stone village of Orcival, in addition to Puy de Dôme itself. You don't need the full week — do a day-section out-and-back near Orcines (the cinder-cone climbs are short but genuinely steep) for a proper look at the "other" volcanoes beyond the famous one, on foot or by trail running if you're up for it. The trailhead most convenient to this trip starts near the Volvic fountain car park.
Before heading back, have the trip's splurge meal — a proper Auvergnat truffade or aligot in Orcines or Clermont-Ferrand; expect roughly €18–22 for a hearty regional plate at a local auberge. Then retrace the route via the Riom Supercharger back to Meudon-la-Forêt.
Bike loaded inside per the Car Camping & Bike Guide — no range penalty from a roof/hitch rack, which matters over a 400+km trip like this one. The summit road itself is closed to private cars (train/shuttle/hike only, plus a dedicated bike lane in season for cyclists willing to climb it), but the lower D941D and the lanes around Orcines, Volvic and Nébouzat offer quiet, scenic riding among the cones at a gentler grade.
